High-Tea Party Draws More Than 400 Prostitutes to Church

Church was transformed into a place where broken and hopeless women felt love and met Jesus.

MNN/TV (Sept 19th, 2006)

Mission Network News reports that in northern Tanzania, Lake Victoria's many islands support a booming fishing industry, which also produces an arena for prostitution.

Burdened to reach the women in the sex trade, the report says Africa Inland Mission's Chris Hamilton, together with local believers and a short-term 'Jesus is Life' team, personally invited the women to a special tea party outreach.

"We had made 240 invitations, and we ran out. And people came back to me and said, 'we didn't have enough invitations' and I said, 'well, that's fine, just go back and invite ladies anyway. They don't have to have an invitation when they come.'"

The next day, 420 ladies showed up for the tea party. Says the report: "Tea, cakes, doughnuts, and door prizes and decorations had transformed a church building into a place where broken and hopeless women felt love and met Jesus."

Katrina's Flood Waters Found to be Far Less Toxic Than Originally Feared

"It is 'good news' that the city's scenario did not worsen and metal concentrations are in accordance with other cities of similar size and age."

Rick Ansorge/TN (Sept 19th, 2006)

A report from HealthDay states that while a devastated New Orleans still struggles to recover from Hurricane Katrina, the conclusion of dozens of scientific papers presented by the American Chemical Society say that the city apparently has avoided one of the storm's most-feared consequences -- "toxic soup" contamination of it's soil.

"Overall, there wasn't an acute health threat," said Dr. Maureen Lichtveld, chairwoman of environmental health sciences at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans, adding that from an environmental health perspective, it's probably safe for most residents to return and rebuild their damaged homes.

"It is 'good news' that the city's scenario did not worsen and metal concentrations are in accordance with other cities of similar size and age," said Michael T. Abel of Texas Tech University. "However, it should be noted that many of the soils/sediments had concentrations of lead and arsenic that exceeded human health soil screening levels set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency."

Abel was reportedly surprised to find that post-Katrina contamination wasn't worse. "With the innumerable number of sources for toxic compounds being submerged by floodwaters, such as industrial facilities, gas stations, vehicles and so on, I expected to at least see a dispersion from high concentrations of contaminants to low concentrations across New Orleans," he said.

Vatican Opens Up Pre-WWII Section of Its Vast "Secret" Archives for Scholars and Historians

David Willey/TN (Sept 19th, 2006)

In what is being called a move of "great interest" to scholars and historians around the world, the Vatican has opened a section of its archives covering the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. In a run-up to World War II, the collection dates from the reign of Pope Pius XI, who was pope from 1922 until just before the outbreak of war in 1939.

According to the BBC report, the Vatican houses one of the world's most important historical archives -- the so-called "secret archive" which contains some 2 million documents dating back up to 1,000 years -- which are kept for safety mainly in underground fireproof bunkers and storerooms placed along some 50 linear miles of shelving.

Periodically the pope decides to open to scrutiny by scholars and professional historians a new treasure house of documents, notes reporter David Willey, who adds that details of relations between the Vatican and these countries during this period will be of outstanding interest to scholars.

Intelligent Design Astronomer Develops Scientific Model to Test Claims

"Testability and predictive power are crucial to credibility. It is right for the scientific community to ask, 'Where is your model?'"

Kathleen Campbell/TN (Sept 19th, 2006)

FlagRegarding the victories in the state of Kansas pertaining to teaching creationism, astronomer Dr. Hugh Ross says: "With the unprecedented strides scientific research has already made in the new millennium, we have been given a unique opportunity to make science education exciting again."

"The 1981 Supreme Court ruling guarantees the place of any scientifically viable model in public education regardless of its theological implications," contends Ross. "The problem scientists have with the current Intelligent Design movement is that ID proponents offer no model by which to test their claims. Testability and predictive power are crucial to credibility," says Ross. "It is right for the scientific community to ask, 'Where is your model?'"

According to a report in Christian Newswire, Ross has introduced the model in his new book, Creation As Science: A Testable Approach to End the Evolution/Creation Wars (NavPress, September 2006). It is testable, verifiable/falsified, and successfully predicts scientific discoveries, notes reporter Kathleen Campbell.

"The all-too-familiar evolution-bashing reveals a failure to understand how science works," Ross comments. "People need to realize that the scientific community will not abandon their current working model, despite its flaws, until and unless a model with greater explanatory power and predictive success emerges to take its place. I see the RTB model, though still a work in progress, as a viable candidate.
